How to Create Cosy Lighting in the Living Room

Cosy living room lighting comes from several low, spread-out sources instead of one sharp ceiling light. The most important step is therefore to turn off the ceiling light and switch on two or three lower light sources instead.
Turn off the ceiling light, turn on the table lamps
A single strong ceiling light creates flat, uniform lighting that rarely feels cosy. Replace it with two or three light sources at different heights in the room, for example a table lamp by the sofa and another by a shelf or side table.
Choose warm light
For evening cosiness in the living room, we recommend light around 2200-2700K. Read more in our guide to choosing between 2200K and 2700K if you are unsure what suits your living room best.
Place the light at eye level with the seating
A table lamp works best when the bottom edge of the shade is roughly at eye level for a seated person. This gives a soft, downward light without glare, and shadows on the ceiling become less dominant.
Use dimming actively
A dimmable bulb or a smart bulb such as WiZ lets you lower the brightness significantly in the evening without changing light source. It is often the single change that makes the biggest difference to the mood.
Think in layers
Most cosy living rooms combine three types of light:
- Ambient light: dimmed, indirect light that gives the room a base
- Task light: a table lamp for reading or an activity
- Mood light: candles or a lamp with a softly shaped shade
