Materials and production

Made slowly, one at a time.

Each SETTLE lamp begins as a digital form and is produced in small batches in Denmark. The shade is formed layer by layer, then inspected, hand-finished and paired with a weighted matte base.

    Digital form

    Profiles, rib spacing and wall thickness are refined on screen, then judged by how they handle light.

  2. 02

    Small-batch production

    Shades are formed layer by layer in small runs after an order is placed.

  3. 03

    Inspection

    Every shade is checked against the studio's finish standard before it continues.

  4. 04

    Hand-finishing

    Rims and seams are finished by hand, and the surface is cleaned and checked in raking light.

    Base assembly

    The shade is paired with a weighted matte base, cable and socket, then tested.

  6. 06

    Final inspection

    The lamp is switched on, inspected once more and packed in minimal packaging.

Materials and responsible production

Made from plants. Designed to last.

Our sculptural shades are produced primarily from PLA, a bioplastic commonly made from renewable plant-based resources such as corn starch or sugarcane.

PLA allows us to create lightweight, detailed forms with minimal material waste compared with many subtractive manufacturing methods. Each shade is produced layer by layer and made to order, helping us avoid unnecessary stock and overproduction.

Although PLA is plant-derived, it is still a durable plastic product. It does not normally break down in home compost or in nature and should not be described as biodegradable under everyday conditions. At the end of its useful life, the product should be handled according to local recycling and waste guidance.

PLA, or polylactic acid, is a thermoplastic made using sugars obtained from plant-based feedstocks. It can be processed through industrial composting under controlled temperature, humidity and microbial conditions where suitable facilities accept it. These conditions are generally not available in household composting, ordinary soil or the natural environment. Local disposal options vary by municipality.

We produce each lamp after it is ordered, reducing unsold inventory and unnecessary material use.

Designed for maintenance

The shade, base, bulb and electrical components are designed as separate parts so individual elements can be maintained or replaced.

Responsible, not perfect.

We believe environmental responsibility should be communicated clearly, without exaggerated claims. SETTLE does not describe PLA as zero-impact, fully biodegradable or completely sustainable. The environmental footprint depends on the material source, production energy, transport, product lifetime and available end-of-life systems.

Our approach is to make fewer objects, produce them carefully and design them to remain useful for as long as possible.
